The Temple

A three-storey marvel of stone

✦

Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir stands on the site revered as the birthplace of Lord Ram. Built in the classic Nagara style, the temple is 380 feet long, 250 feet wide and 161 feet tall, resting on a 4,000-block foundation of granite.

Its 392 pillars and 44 doorways are carved from pink Rajasthani Bansi Paharpur sandstone, while white marble appears in the sanctum. The main sanctum houses Ram Lalla, the five-year-old form of Lord Ram, sculpted in black stone by Mysuru artist Arun Yogiraj.

On the first floor sits the Ram Darbar — Ram, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman — while the outer walls carry relief work of deities, sages and episodes from the Ramayana.

Traditional or modest clothing is appropriate. Avoid shorts and sleeveless tops. Footwear must be removed before entry.

Use the free lockers

Cloakrooms and lockers near the gates are free. Deposit everything prohibited there first — do not leave valuables in your vehicle.

Insider Tips

How to avoid the longest queues

✦

Go early, especially in summer

The 6:00–7:00 AM window is the calmest and coolest. By 10 AM in April–June, queues stretch and the stone courtyard gets hot. Winter mornings can be foggy — allow extra travel time.

Avoid festival crowd peaks

Ram Navami, Diwali/Deepotsav, and the anniversary of the Pran Pratishtha draw enormous crowds. Beautiful to witness, but expect hours of waiting and packed hotels.

Check the weather

Ayodhya is hot and humid May–June, wet July–September, and pleasant October–March. Carry an umbrella in monsoon and a light shawl for winter mornings.

Sort out your phone first

Keep your phone in your hotel or use the locker before you join the queue. Step away from the line only once you have checked what is permitted at that gate.
